Ben Stokes Excluded from England Squad over Nightclub Incident

Must read

Ben Stokes has been removed from the England squad for the second test against New Zealand following an investigation into a nightclub incident. Reports indicated that the England captain was involved in an altercation with Gus Atkinson, a security staff member, and a Saracens rugby player. The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Stokes has lost the captaincy and has been excluded from the squad while the investigation continues.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the ECB stated that Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson will not be considered for selection for the upcoming test match against New Zealand at the Kia Oval on June 17 due to the ongoing investigation. Yorkshire batter Joe Root will take over as the Interim Captain, with Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batter Jordan Cox joining the squad.

As a result of the decision, vice-captain Harry Brook has been passed over, with Joe Root assuming the captaincy role. The first test between England and New Zealand was won by England by 115 runs, with the subsequent test scheduled to start at The Oval next week.

The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols related to the nightclub incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson after the conclusion of the first Men’s Test against New Zealand. The ECB is gathering more information, and details about the squad for the second test will be provided in due course. Saracens also issued a statement acknowledging an incident involving one of their academy players.
