Celine Dion has shared new insights into her battle with stiff person syndrome ahead of her upcoming five-week residency in Paris starting next month. The renowned Canadian singer revealed in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of the rare neurological autoimmune disorder for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022.
The intense pain associated with stiff person syndrome, which worsened in 2020, often left Dion struggling to walk and necessitated high doses of Valium for relief. The condition, affecting only a small number of individuals worldwide, is characterized by muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause or approved treatment for the syndrome, other therapeutic interventions can help manage its symptoms.
Before being diagnosed, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. Feeling a sense of dishonesty, she expressed gratitude to her supporters for enabling her to pursue extensive treatment.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining performances. Despite not appearing in public since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is now gearing up for a comeback in September. Her recovery routine involves a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she has been dedicating time to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming shows.
Describing Dion as constantly on the move and afraid of becoming immobile, Harper’s reporter Jazmine Hughes highlighted the singer’s determination to return to the stage. Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a miraculous second chance that she cherishes deeply.
Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, Dion is eager to make her comeback. Her Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled between September 12 and May 29 next year, marks a significant milestone in her journey back to the spotlight.
