Another blockbuster making waves is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations by amassing $1.67 billion US globally after its debut weekend brought in $360 million US. This achievement places it among the highest-grossing movies of all time and sets it as the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion US, following closely behind “Avengers: Endgame.”
Despite its success, “The Odyssey” is yet to fully tap into the Chinese market, with an official release scheduled for Friday. The film has only had limited screenings in Beijing so far, but is anticipated to draw significant demand in China, where approximately 800 Imax screens are set to showcase the movie.
One factor contributing to the global appeal of these films is the Imax format, which has seen a surge in popularity despite concerns about declining theater attendance during the pandemic. Imax, originally known for its educational content, transitioned to event cinema with releases such as “Avatar” and Nolan’s works like “Oppenheimer” and “The Odyssey.” Nolan’s strong connection to Imax is evident in his decision to film “The Odyssey” entirely in the format, making it Imax’s highest-grossing domestic release with $147.3 million US in domestic earnings.
The success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” has contributed to Hollywood’s resurgence at the box office, with ticket sales outperforming the previous year by 18.5%. The industry is experiencing its best box-office year since before the pandemic, with five movies surpassing $1 billion US in earnings. Analysts predict that summer theatrical revenue will hit $4 billion US, a milestone signaling a thriving business for Hollywood.
