England has officially appointed Stephen Fleming as the new Test head coach while Joe Root returns to lead as captain for a second time. The ECB sought a new leader for the red-ball side following Brendon McCullum’s shift to focus solely on limited-overs cricket after England’s Test Series loss to New Zealand.
Fleming, a successful former New Zealand Test captain, brings vast experience, having been associated with Chennai Super Kings for 18 years and having played for English county teams like Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire. He notably helped lead Nottinghamshire to a County Championship title in 2005.
Additionally, Fleming led Southern Brave to The Hundred men’s competition final in 2023. His coaching tenure with England begins after the ongoing Test Series against Pakistan, during which Marcus Trescothick serves as the interim Head Coach.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Fleming emphasized his dedication to helping the team achieve success both in the short and long term. He highlighted the talented players within the squad and his eagerness to work with Joe Root, praising Root’s achievements and potential as a leader.
