Hundreds of flights in the UK faced delays as a result of an air traffic control issue. The disruption in UK airspace occurred due to a problem at the Met Office, which led to the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) not receiving crucial weather information. Ryanair experienced 155 flight delays affecting nearly 30,000 passengers with delays extending up to three hours. EasyJet was hit even harder, with 253 flights delayed, representing 13% of its scheduled departures for the day.
The spokesperson for NATS mentioned that a technical issue at the Met Office overnight caused the disruption in receiving essential weather data, crucial for ensuring safe flight management by air traffic controllers and pilots. Consequently, temporary air traffic restrictions were implemented in the morning and later lifted. Efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue in collaboration with the Met Office.
Ryanair’s Chief Operations Officer, Neal McMahon, criticized NATS for the recurring system failures, comparing the current situation to a major incident in 2023 that caused extensive delays and cancellations, affecting over 700,000 passengers. The previous incident involved a technical problem that led to significant flight disruptions, with a single flight triggering a system failure due to a code confusion issue.
Following an independent review, recommendations were made to enhance NATS’ operations and improve collaboration within the aviation sector to handle similar incidents better in the future. The final report highlighted the need to learn from past failures and implement sector-wide improvements. The UK Civil Aviation Authority emphasized the importance of understanding the root causes of such incidents to enhance the aviation system’s resilience for future operations.
