A previously closed theme park in Cleethorpes, shuttered in 2016, might see a revival with new holiday park plans described as “Center Parcs-by-the-sea.” Pleasure Island, once a popular attraction with 50 rides and live shows, has remained abandoned, with only decaying buildings as remnants of its past glory. However, a £70 million redevelopment project is in the works to transform the site into a complex featuring a Lidl superstore, hotels, and a holiday park.
The proposed revitalization, aiming to create around 400 jobs locally and another 400 during construction, awaits approval from council officers. Initial plans were submitted in January 2023, with various assessments and studies required before final consideration by the council.
A consortium comprising Lidl GB Ltd, YPG Fab2 ltd, Seaside Getaways, and Church Lane Humberston Ltd aims to replace the derelict theme park with a new holiday center, Lidl store, and hotels. The proposed site expansion includes 272 lodges, hotels, dining establishments, retail outlets, and a garden center, covering approximately 60 acres.
The comprehensive development plan includes two hotels, a drive-thru coffee shop, retail units, and a cycle hire center. Notably, a lake at the heart of the site will host an anglers’ hub with facilities for fishing enthusiasts. Despite objections from rival retailers and concerns from local residents regarding traffic and wildlife impact, many support the development for its potential job opportunities, tourism boost, and removal of an eyesore.
The planning application report confirms the project’s alignment with tourism and economic development goals, highlighting the positive impact on the local economy. The proposed development, which includes lodges, hotels, and a variety of amenities, aims to enhance the resort’s appeal and economic vitality.
Adrian Smith, Director of Church Lane Humberston Limited leading the project, expressed delight at the recommendation for approval, emphasizing the job creation and economic benefits the £70 million development will bring to the area.
