“Rugby Icon Kevin Sinfield Set to Receive Knighthood”

Must read

Rugby icon Kevin Sinfield dedicated his illustrious career to Leeds Rhinos, renowned for his exceptional fundraising efforts in support of Motor Neurone Disease. The 45-year-old is poised to receive a knighthood in the upcoming King’s Birthday Honours for his remarkable contributions in memory of his late colleague and friend, Rob Burrow, who valiantly battled the illness.

Sinfield has raised over £11 million for MND charities following Burrow’s diagnosis with the debilitating muscle-wasting condition in 2019, with Burrow tragically passing away at the age of 41 in 2024. Hailing from Oldham and born in 1980, Sinfield attended Saddleworth School and excelled in rugby league upon joining Leeds as a teenager. He fondly recalled his initial encounter with Burrow, highlighting their enduring friendship and shared experiences both on and off the field.

Throughout his distinguished tenure with Leeds, Sinfield clinched seven Super League titles, two Challenge Cups, three World Club Challenges, and three League Leaders’ Shields. Additionally, he represented England in 29 matches and Great Britain in 14. Transitioning to rugby union post-retirement, Sinfield assumed the role of defense coach for Leicester Tigers and the England national team.

Following Burrow’s MND diagnosis, Sinfield embarked on a series of extraordinary fundraising endeavors. Notable feats include running seven marathons in seven days in 2020, covering 101 Miles in 24 Hours the following year, and completing seven ultramarathons in subsequent years across various UK and Ireland cities. In a heartwarming display of camaraderie, Sinfield famously carried Burrow over the finish line at the Leeds Marathon in 2023.

Tragically, Burrow succumbed to MND after a valiant battle lasting four-and-a-half years. Paying tribute to his dear friend, Sinfield expressed profound admiration for Burrow’s strength and resilience, vowing to cherish their cherished memories forever. Sinfield, a father of three, recently announced his final challenge, The Grand Finale, which entails running between Hull and Manchester in a bid to raise further awareness and funds for MND research.

Reflecting on his fundraising achievements, Sinfield lauded the collective effort of his team and emphasized the importance of ongoing support in the quest for a cure. Undeterred by the challenges ahead, Sinfield remains steadfast in his commitment to advancing the fight against MND.
