Multiple levels of the Pentagon were placed on lockdown earlier today, prompting the evacuation of personnel following a false alarm related to a hazardous materials incident.
Insiders familiar with the situation disclosed that several corridors spanning floors two to five were cordoned off as a hazardous materials response team conducted an inquiry.
Reports indicated that law enforcement officials within the facility were seen donning gas masks and specialized chemical protective attire, according to a source cited by CNN.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell affirmed that the building, which serves as the headquarters of the US military in Arlington County, Virginia, detected an air quality anomaly necessitating an evacuation until further assessment is completed.
Parnell stated, “The Department is implementing standard safety measures, including a shelter-in-place directive for the affected section. Response teams are on standby to assist occupants.”
A communication issued by the Pentagon’s security team noted the detection of an air quality concern, with plans for additional testing which could extend for one to two hours, emphasizing readiness to aid occupants if required.
The message advised observers not to misinterpret the activities, including the presence of response personnel from various agencies and precautionary actions in the central courtyard.
Department spokesperson Captain Jamie Jill mentioned the involvement of a hazardous materials response team alongside the Arlington County Fire Department in addressing the incident, later confirming it as a false alarm that prompted the evacuation.
