“Journey through Seoul: From DMZ to Beauty Rituals”

Must read

In just one day, I will find myself under the watchful eyes of a weathered octopus head, perched atop a massive tentacle.

The following day, a unique 18-step program will involve beauticians securing a plastic bag connected to a steam hose around my head, marking an unconventional stop on my journey through Seoul.

However, before these distinctive experiences, I begin my exploration at the renowned DMZ, a significant tourist attraction in South Korea. With all 3,000 daily slots reserved months in advance, visitors eagerly make the trip from the capital to catch a glimpse of North Korea, although photography is strictly prohibited.

Amid the tension and military checkpoints, I arrive at the Imjingak Resort building, offering a vantage point to witness North Korea, a country perceived as one of the most peculiar in the world, lagging far behind its prosperous southern counterpart.

Peering through stationary binoculars reveals a large North Korean flag flying above miniature figures meandering the streets below, portraying a seemingly tranquil scene along the border.

While past events stirred chaos between the North and South with unconventional exchanges, current relations have taken on a more subdued and serious tone, with limited information crossing the border following the cessation of the Republic’s Sunshine aid program in 2020.

As I spent a week in South Korea, it became evident that thoughts of reunification with the North have waned among the population, reflecting shifting attitudes and priorities in the country.

South Korea’s cultural influence has surged globally, propelled by hits like Gangnam Style, Parasite, and Squid Game, contributing to a substantial £28 billion in cultural exports in 2025. Virgin Atlantic has capitalized on this cultural wave by launching direct flights from London Heathrow to Seoul, marking a significant milestone for UK-South Korea travel.

Exploring the bustling streets of Seoul, I encountered a fascination with skincare, a thriving industry generating billions in exports, drawing international attention to the country’s beauty standards and products.

While the city dazzles with its vibrant nightlife and modern skyline, I found solace in the quieter and quirkier corners of Seoul, such as the abandoned Yongma Land theme park and the revitalized Cheonggyecheon river, now a serene urban oasis teeming with life.

Seoul’s dynamic energy and blend of tradition and modernity create a captivating experience for visitors, offering a glimpse into a society at the forefront of change and innovation.
