Tragedy struck at the North West 200 in Northern Ireland as a rider lost his life following a crash during a qualifying session.
The racing event was immediately halted after the incident, and it was later confirmed by organizers that the rider, whose identity remains undisclosed, had passed away.
A spokesperson stated, “A participant in the 2026 Briggs Equipment North West 200 has tragically lost his life following an accident at Station corner on the NW200 course during the morning’s Superbike qualifying session.
“The session was immediately stopped, and emergency services responded, but sadly, the rider could not survive his injuries.
“While the family has allowed the event to proceed, they have requested that the rider’s name not be disclosed at this moment.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and team from the Coleraine and District Motor Club, the race organizers.”
Road Racing Ireland expressed its condolences to the rider’s family, friends, team, and all those impacted by the day’s tragic events.
Covering a distance of 8.97 miles on public roads closed for the occasion, the North West 200 event unfolds around the ‘Triangle’ circuit connecting Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine. It stands as Northern Ireland’s premier outdoor sporting spectacle, drawing approximately 100,000 spectators.
This fatality marks the first at the race since Malachi Mitchell-Thomas lost his life in a Supertwins race back in 2016.
Following the incident, event organizers adjusted the schedule for the evening. The roads are now reopen, with planned closures at 4.45pm and four qualifying sessions replacing the initially scheduled races from 5.45pm onwards.
