A group of farmers were shocked to discover a newborn baby abandoned in a hole on a rural plot of land. The infant, with her umbilical cord still attached, was found in a field and was struggling for survival after being left in the cold during the night. Local workers in Sao Mateus, Brazil, heard the baby’s cries as they were on their way to work and immediately contacted emergency services.
A female paramedic provided warmth to the cold baby before nursing technician Maria Aparecida, known as Chica, arrived to provide initial medical assistance. Chica cut the umbilical cord to ensure the baby could be safely treated. Despite breathing difficulties due to exposure to harsh conditions, the baby remained active and was stabilized on-site before being taken to Roberto Silvares Hospital in Sao Mateus.
The newborn is set to be transferred to Sao Jose Hospital in Colatina, a specialized pediatric facility, for further care. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the baby. In a separate incident in New York City, a newborn girl was discovered at a busy train station, also with her umbilical cord attached. Emergency services responded promptly, and the baby was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
The person who found the baby at the train station reported the incident during rush hour on October 20, prompting a swift response from emergency crews. New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow referred to the event as the “Miracle on 34th Street,” praising the quick actions of responders in attending to the unattended infant.
