The top and bottom-ranking seaside towns and villages in the UK have been announced.
In the latest survey by Which?, over 5,300 individuals shared their experiences of UK coastal destinations in the past year. The criteria included beach quality, scenery, food and drink options, accommodation, tourist attractions, shopping opportunities, and value for money.
For the sixth consecutive year, Bamburgh in Northumberland claimed the top spot with an impressive overall score of 84%. Bamburgh received top marks for its beach, seafront, and scenery, with visitors praising the picturesque beach overlooking Bamburgh Castle and the stunning coastal views.
Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear secured the second position, scoring 82% overall. The town excelled in the seafront/pier and food and drink categories, with visitors especially appreciating the delicious fish and chips and the magnificent golden sand beaches.
St Andrews in Scotland claimed the third spot with a solid score of 81%, praised for its beach, tourist attractions, scenery, and seafront/pier. Crail in Fife also made it to the top five due to its charming fishing harbor, cobbled streets, and whitewashed walls.
Frinton-on-Sea in Essex emerged as the highest-ranking southern town, impressing visitors with its serene seafront and peaceful atmosphere. On the contrary, Bognor Regis was declared the worst seaside town in the UK for the second consecutive year.
Clacton-on-Sea, despite having the largest pier in Europe, received a low ranking this year, positioning it as the eighth worst seaside destination. The survey also highlighted popular but middling destinations like Margate and Newquay, which received mixed reviews for peace and quiet and value for money.
Barry Island, known from the TV series Gavin & Stacey, garnered a score of 54%, with varying opinions from visitors about its charm and attractions.
The survey, conducted with 5,320 participants, reflects experiences from 11,999 leisure visits to UK seaside towns in the previous year.
