“UK Parents Warned of Lengthy Process for Social Media Ban”

Must read

Parents are cautioned by experts that despite an upcoming announcement by the Prime Minister regarding a social media ban for children, the process is expected to be lengthy and complex. Keir Starmer is set to introduce a range of online safety measures before the Makerfield by-election, where Andy Burnham is seeking re-election.

Concerns have been raised that rushing the implementation of a social media ban for under 16s may be a strategic move by the PM ahead of potential leadership challenges. In Australia, a similar ban took over a year to be enforced after legislation was passed in 2024. However, the UK government has streamlined its preparations to expedite the process by utilizing existing powers under the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill.

The plan involves using secondary legislation for a quicker passage, with Technology Secretary Liz Kendall aiming for the necessary laws to be in place by year-end. The implementation is expected to be an ongoing effort to adapt to the evolving technology landscape.

Labour MP Chi Onwurah has expressed doubts about the enforcement capabilities of media regulator Ofcom in swiftly implementing the ban. However, officials claim that Ofcom is prepared to act promptly. NSPCC’s Rani Govender suggested focusing on banning design features rather than specific platforms to ensure future-proofing against potential risks to children online.

The Government’s consultation on social media garnered a significant response, with strong parental support for a ban. Nevertheless, opinions among online safety experts are divided, with concerns raised about holding tech companies accountable and potential unintended consequences. The US has criticized the idea of government-mandated restrictions, contrasting with the UK’s approach. Mr. Starmer is emphasizing the importance of considering families’ well-being in the UK amid differing views on social media regulation.
