Donald Trump has attributed the failures in his $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool to unspecified “vandals.” The refurbishment, handled by companies known for maintaining swimming pools in Trump’s hotels, involved resurfacing the pool in “American Flag Blue.” However, the project faced criticism as costs exceeded the initial estimates by tenfold, and the water quickly turned green due to algae infestation.
The cause of the algae issue remains uncertain, with speculations suggesting that residual algae in the pipes could have rapidly multiplied in the hot Washington DC climate. While the pool has a filtration system, it is unclear if repairs to the system were part of the renovation. Additionally, a section of the resurfacing material began peeling off and floating on the water’s surface, with some tourists even taking pieces as souvenirs.
Despite these issues, there is no evidence linking vandals to the problems with the reflecting pool. Trump, known for past overpromising and construction shortcomings, referenced unrelated vandalism near the Washington monument and made claims of deliberate damage to the pool’s interior. However, these allegations lack substantiation.
Trump asserted that efforts are underway to address the algae problem and repair the damaged area. He also insinuated political motivations, mentioning the “Radical Left Lunatics” and “Dumocats” allegedly attempting to undermine the project. Law enforcement is said to be investigating the situation, although no definitive link to vandalism has been established.
