Three children and an adult have tragically lost their lives after a vehicle collided with a group of cyclists in a rural area of the Netherlands. The incident occurred near the village of Vogelwaarde, close to the Belgian border, where the group, on a school trip, was struck by the vehicle. Dutch authorities reported that two children and an adult succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while four children were transported to hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium with severe injuries. Sadly, one of the injured children passed away later at a hospital in Rotterdam, as confirmed by the Zeeland Security Region organization.
The victims involved in this tragic crash were part of a group comprising 14 schoolchildren and two chaperones from an elementary school in the nearby town of Axel. Following the incident, the authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the collision on a provincial road situated between farmers’ fields near Vogelwaarde, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Amsterdam.
A 19-year-old individual has been detained by the police in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the extent of his involvement. The authorities have not disclosed whether the detained individual was the driver of the vehicle.
