An investigation has been initiated by the police following an incident where a young child reportedly consumed disinfectant from a bottle mistakenly placed in her McDonald’s Happy Meal. The toddler, aged two, was rushed to the hospital after ingesting a ‘strong smelling liquid’ that was inadvertently added to her meal during a drive-thru order. The child’s mother, aged 34, had selected water as the drink for her daughter and only realized something was amiss when the child became visibly distressed and screamed while leaving the fast-food outlet in Kassel, Germany.
Upon returning to the restaurant to address the issue, the mother contacted the authorities, who informed her that the child was fortunate not to have sustained severe injuries. Emergency medical services initially attended to the toddler before she was transported to the hospital under her mother’s care.
Investigators suspect that the bottle had been previously used for cleaning purposes by staff and was unintentionally included in the Happy Meal packaging. The inquiry is focused on potential negligence leading to bodily harm, as there is no evidence suggesting deliberate harm towards the child.
A spokesperson for McDonald’s in Germany stated to the HNA newspaper that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation and expressed concern over the incident, refraining from providing further comments at the time. This incident is not the first of its kind involving unexpected items in Happy Meals.
In a separate incident in October 2023, a mother in the UK expressed dismay after allegedly discovering a cigarette butt inside her child’s meal at McDonald’s. Gemma Kirk-Bonner, a teaching assistant, found the cigarette butt while feeding her two sons at a branch in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Following this incident, McDonald’s advised Ms. Kirk-Bonner to contact customer services for a thorough investigation and assistance in finding a resolution.
