“Stay Alert for P800 Tax Notifications This Summer”

Must read

HMRC is advising individuals to stay alert for an essential tax notification during the upcoming summer months. If you are under PAYE and have either overpaid or underpaid taxes for the 2025/26 tax year, you can anticipate receiving a P800 letter via mail.

Various factors can lead to inaccuracies in your tax bill, such as having an incorrect tax code, recent job changes, or commencing pension claims. Annually, following the conclusion of the tax year, HMRC reviews its PAYE records to ensure accurate Income Tax payment on earnings or pensions.

P800 letters, scheduled for issuance in batches until March 2027, will detail the process for claiming a tax refund if you have overpaid. Typically, you can claim your refund online or await a cheque delivery.

The most prevalent tax code, 1257L, applies to individuals with one job or pension, although exceptions exist. To locate your tax code, refer to your latest payslip or P45 if you have recently left employment.

In cases of underpaid tax, one would owe HMRC the outstanding amount, emphasizing the importance of resolving the matter promptly to prevent accumulating a larger debt.

Marc Gill, Director of Personal Tax Operations, emphasized the importance of ensuring prompt refunds for those who have overpaid taxes. If you receive a P800 letter this summer, promptly follow the outlined instructions to claim your refund via GOV.UK or the HMRC app, a process that only requires a few minutes.
