Bereaved families and survivors of terrorist attacks will now receive continuous support in a significant win for victims. According to Home Office minister Dan Jarvis, the convoluted system for accessing trauma and grief assistance is being overhauled following criticisms from those impacted by incidents such as the attacks on Westminster Bridge, Tunisian holiday resorts, and Manchester Arena.
The establishment of a new 24/7 Victim and Survivors Support Hub on Monday will bring together various organizations, including the NHS, to provide comprehensive support. Cheryl Stollery, whose husband was among the casualties of the Tunisia resort attack in 2015, expressed relief at the centralized support initiative, acknowledging the diverse and challenging nature of post-attack recovery.
Advocate Travis Frain, a survivor of the Westminster Bridge attack in 2017, emphasized the difficulty victims face in navigating support services post-terrorist attack. He highlighted the importance of a structured support system to prevent victims from being left to navigate multiple agencies alone while their needs worsen.
The launch of the Support Hub precedes the upcoming National Day for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism on August 21. Victim Support, in collaboration with the Peace Collective and West London NHS Trust, aims to pool expertise to enhance victim care.
Speaking on the new initiative, Mr. Jarvis stated that the Support Hub signifies a shift towards a more streamlined and cohesive approach to aiding those affected by terrorism. The Hub will offer personalized support plans, dedicated caseworkers, and a single point of contact for emotional and practical assistance, aiming to simplify the rebuilding process for survivors.
Additionally, the Support Hub will have specialized caseworkers available to assist children and young people in need of support. Katie Kempen, chief executive at Victim Support, highlighted the far-reaching impact of terror attacks on victims and families, underscoring the importance of timely and tailored support in the recovery journey.
