Conservative and Bloc Members of Parliament are pushing for an urgent session of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate espionage accusations against a former Canadian intern detained by Belgian authorities on suspicion of spying.
Expressing deep concern, Conservative MP Frank Caputo highlighted the need for a thorough examination of Canada’s national security screening procedures. He emphasized the importance of determining any potential security gaps that could have jeopardized sensitive information and the safety of Canada and its allies.
The intern in question, Biwei Zhang, served at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. While Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation identified her as Zhang, an experienced systems engineer with an economic background.
Zhang’s professional history includes past roles at the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada. Reports from security sources in Europe, including Reuters, allege that Zhang’s behavior at SHAPE raised suspicions, with instances of unauthorized access to restricted areas and files beyond her job scope.
Currently detained in Belgium, Zhang has not been formally charged with any wrongdoing. The public safety committee, as per Caputo’s statement, aims to scrutinize how Zhang obtained the internship at NATO, the extent of security screenings conducted prior to her appointment, any red flags from Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring protocols in place.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged a thorough investigation into Canada’s security screening processes in response to the case. He stressed the importance of uncovering the truth behind the incident and preventing similar occurrences in the future.
The situation has sparked concerns about the efficacy of Canada’s security vetting systems. Prime Minister Mark Carney reassured that Canadian security agencies were actively involved in the investigation, indicating preparedness in handling the situation.
