Keir Starmer is set to introduce innovative AI tools known as the “Jobcentre in your pocket” to assist individuals in securing employment. The Prime Minister will emphasize the inclusive nature of technological advancements in a speech, highlighting the launch of a new AI assistant developed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to offer round-the-clock guidance to job seekers.

The AI assistant will support users in crafting resumes, providing job search tips, and aiding in career advancement. This initiative follows concerning statistics revealing over a million young individuals aged 16 to 24 are currently not engaged in education, employment, or training (Neet), with experts cautioning that the situation may deteriorate further. Ahead of his speech, Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of ensuring that technological progress benefits everyone, not just a select few.

The new tools, set to be introduced as a three-month trial, are described by No10 as a convenient “Jobcentre in your pocket,” delivering personalized career advice. The government has disclosed that more than 50 AI companies have submitted proposals to develop AI tutoring tools for young people, with the technology scheduled for implementation starting in Autumn 2027, aiding nearly 500,000 children receiving free school meals.

To address unemployment and educational challenges, an AI “bootcamp scheme” will be launched nationwide this summer, targeting individuals at risk of being unemployed or disconnected from educational opportunities. Business Secretary Peter Kyle expressed a commitment to increasing state involvement in high-growth UK companies, emphasizing a bold and ambitious approach to supporting British innovation.

Recent warnings from former cabinet member Alan Milburn have raised concerns about the emergence of a “lost generation” in Britain, projecting a significant number of young people being excluded from employment, training, or education in the coming years. Highlighting the inadequacy of current welfare and healthcare systems for young individuals, these warnings underscore the urgency of proactive measures to address the challenges faced by youth in the country.
