John Tory, the former mayor of Toronto, has been appointed as the new chair of the board of directors for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In a statement, Tory expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with TIFF’s board members, leaders, artists, and filmmakers to influence the festival’s upcoming direction. His term officially commences on October 1, coinciding with the festival’s dates from September 10 to 20 this year.
Tory succeeds Jeffrey Remedios, who held the position of chair since 2021. Remedios commended the festival and its leadership, expressing his lasting pride in his contributions to TIFF’s evolution. Additionally, TIFF introduced three new members to its board of directors: Deborah Flint, David Furnish, and Daniel Tisch Echevarría.
Furthermore, Asha Daniere, who served on the board for nine years, will be stepping down. TIFF conveyed its deep appreciation for Daniere’s dedicated service and significant impact on the organization.
