Saltdean Lido, an iconic seaside pool in Brighton, narrowly avoided being redeveloped into flats but was saved through a dedicated effort. Originally built in 1937 in Art Deco style, it served as a popular spot for staycationers until its closure. However, a successful campaign preserved it as a swimming facility.
Following extensive restoration work, the £11 million refurbishment was unveiled in 2024, showcasing the lido’s historic charm from the 1930s. The complex now boasts various amenities such as a café, library, ballroom, and offices. Visitors can enjoy a 40-meter outdoor pool, relaxation areas, yoga spaces, and live music events. Additionally, the venue offers a gym, sauna, fitness classes, and event spaces for hire, including hosting weddings.
The lido operates from May 1 to September 10 during the summer season and remains open with reduced hours in winter. Notably, Dogtember sessions are a highlight in early autumn, allowing dog owners to swim with their pets on selected weekends. Dogtember events draw participants from around the UK, providing a gated area for dogs to freely roam off-leash. This year, Dogtember is scheduled for September 12 and 13, and October 3 and 4, with tickets expected to sell out quickly upon release on May 1.
Funded by the National Lottery and community donations, the lido’s renovation was a community effort. A volunteer guide expressed delight at the reopening, emphasizing the lido’s significance as a Grade II*-listed site. Saltdean, located just outside the bustling Brighton city center, offers a serene coastal village ambiance with shingle beaches and scenic cliffs, contrasting the urban beach atmosphere in the city.
Surrounded by green spaces like Saltdean Park, visitors can explore the picturesque Sussex Downs countryside. The area features a quaint high street with independent shops, tearooms, and places to enjoy traditional fish and chips by the promenade.
