Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has received a four-year suspension from professional tennis for declining a doping test in December. Vondrousova expressed her displeasure on Instagram when a doping control officer arrived at her residence for an out-of-competition test.
The Czech player, who claimed the Wimbledon title in 2023, characterized the incident as a violation of her privacy. In a recent statement, she mentioned feeling overwhelmed and fearful during the unannounced test attempt. Vondrousova clarified that her reluctance was due to concerns for her safety and confirmed her medical diagnosis of Acute Stress Reaction and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged Vondrousova for refusing the test and imposed a four-year ban, citing a lack of valid reasons for her action. According to ITIA, Vondrousova failed to provide a sample during the out-of-competition test despite notification by a Doping Control Officer. The agency highlighted that refusing a test carries the same consequences as testing positive to prevent leniency for doping offenders.
ITIA’s CEO Karen Moorhouse emphasized the importance of fair competition and player safety during the testing process. Moorhouse reassured that testers are trained professionals with proper identification and procedures in place to safeguard players and maintain the integrity of the sport.
Despite Vondrousova’s explanations regarding stress and safety concerns, the tribunal deemed her justifications insufficient for refusing the test. The ruling serves as a reminder to all players about the risks of non-compliance with anti-doping protocols.
