“European Entry/Exit System Causes Holiday Delays”

Must read

During the busy holiday season, the implementation of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) is reportedly causing delays at popular European destinations like Spain, Greece, and France.

Reports from local media in Spain have alerted that British travelers might encounter lengthy queues lasting up to six hours, leading to missed flights as airports attribute the delays to “additional processing requirements.” All non-EU visitors, including British citizens, are now mandated to provide biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints upon entry to the European Union and use designated machines for departure to monitor overstays.

British travelers often experience extended wait times at airports due to sharing queues with non-EU nationals, unlike EU passport holders who have dedicated lanes. However, individuals journeying to Portugal or Sweden this summer have the opportunity to expedite their process.

An official but lesser-known app could potentially facilitate a quicker airport experience. The Travel to Europe app, currently accessible for visitors to two EU countries, may expand to other destinations in the future as stated by the developers.

Travelers bound for these countries can download the app from the App Store or Google Play, ensuring they select the official app and not a third-party one. By selecting the destination country, adding border crossing details, and estimating arrival time up to 72 hours before travel, a new journey can be created using the app.

Through the app, travelers can scan their passport’s personal details page and chip, take a selfie for identity verification, and answer a few travel-related queries, streamlining processes typically done at EES kiosks and saving time at the airport.

Families traveling together can include additional passengers in their journey submission. Upon confirmation of the accepted journey, travelers can follow airport signs for security clearance. While using the app does not guarantee seamless border entry, it can significantly reduce queuing times for most holidaymakers, enabling them to promptly enjoy their destination, such as the sunny shores of Portugal.

Initial reviews of the app have been mixed, with some users expressing frustration over limited country availability but others praising its efficiency in reducing wait times. British tourists, comprising the largest segment of Portugal’s tourism, significantly contribute to the country’s economy alongside other foreign visitors, with Brits identified as top spenders followed by Germans.
