EDF is offering complimentary fans and energy credit this summer to assist households facing challenges in keeping cool amid rising temperatures. The energy provider is introducing Heatwave Relief Packs, a £1 million initiative aimed at aiding vulnerable customers during extreme summer heat periods.
Recent temperature records in the UK have soared, with June marking the highest ever temperature of 37.7°C. With amber and yellow heat health alerts currently in effect across England and projected highs of 35°C, EDF’s initiative comes at a crucial time.
Up to 10,000 EDF customers experiencing difficulties in maintaining cool indoor environments are expected to benefit from this program. Eligible households could receive tailored support valued at up to £100, encompassing various forms of assistance.
Identification of eligible customers will be carried out by EDF through its support teams, referrals from trusted partners and community organizations, and direct customer engagement channels.
Joe Souto, EDF’s Director of Retail, emphasized the importance of extending support to vulnerable households during extreme heatwaves. He highlighted the dilemma faced by some vulnerable customers who may be hesitant to use cooling appliances due to concerns about affordability.
“As heatwaves become more frequent, support for vulnerable customers must evolve too. Our Heatwave Relief Packs offer practical assistance when needed, ensuring those in greatest need can stay safe without worrying about the costs associated with essential cooling equipment.”
Following a recent increase in energy bills due to the Ofgem price cap rise of approximately 13% on July 1, households have been cautioned that bills are likely to remain high until the price cap revision in October. Cornwall Insight projects that by October, a typical household could be facing a bill of £1,849, particularly challenging as temperatures drop and heating usage increases.
