Summer is approaching, offering a perfect chance to take a short getaway. If you’re looking for a destination with great food, beautiful scenery, rich history, and a peaceful ambiance, there’s a place that should definitely be on your travel radar – and after your first visit, you’ll be eager to return.
Nestled on the east coast of Scotland, St Andrews is home to one of the oldest universities in Britain, making it a truly distinctive location. Imagine a 170-year-old pub just a stone’s throw away from a modern store like Oliver Bonas. Despite having visited numerous times, each trip to St Andrews unveils something new and exciting.
During a weekend escape to Lower Largo, a quaint village in Fife, we decided to spend an afternoon exploring St Andrews. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Edinburgh and just under two hours from Glasgow.
While St Andrews is mainly renowned for its golfing heritage, notably the Old Course, which is globally celebrated, there is more to discover beyond the greens. The iconic Swilcan Bridge, standing for over 700 years on the 18th hole, is a must-see landmark that beckons for a photograph every time you visit.
After capturing the essence of the Old Course, a short stroll led us to the charming Jigger Inn pub, dating back to the 1850s. With its cozy atmosphere, crackling fires, and excellent menu, it was an ideal spot for a satisfying meal.
Satiated and refreshed, we ventured into the town itself, a compact area with a handful of main streets housing various shops and attractions. As you wander through the medieval streets of St Andrews, the rich history of the place is palpable, especially considering that the university has been educating since 1413, continuing its academic excellence to this day.
Besides its academic prestige, St Andrews is known for its affluence and multicultural population, attracting students from around the globe. Notably, it’s where William and Catherine first met, igniting their royal romance.
A visit to the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once Scotland’s largest church built in 1158, offers a haunting yet fascinating experience. The site, now a graveyard, showcases a glimpse of the past, even though some areas are restricted due to structural concerns.
Despite the town’s vibrant atmosphere, the proximity to the sea often goes unnoticed. Adjacent to the Old Course lies the renowned West Sands Beach, famous for its appearance in the film “Chariots of Fire.” While the weather was a bit brisk for a seaside walk during our visit, the beach remains a picturesque spot to unwind.
St Andrews boasts a diverse array of shops, from popular high street brands like H&M and Jo Malone to unique independent boutiques. As a book enthusiast, a visit to Topping and Company, a family-owned bookshop with an impressive collection, was a highlight of the trip.
The journey wouldn’t be complete without indulging in the famed fudge doughnuts at Fisher and Donaldson, a bakery established in 1919. These delectable treats, filled with fresh custard and topped with fudge icing, are a must-try in St Andrews.
Whether you spend a day or a weekend in St Andrews, the town’s charm is ever-present, especially under the summer sun. With its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, St Andrews offers a delightful escape for all types of travelers.
