Dedicated Scottish Fan Travels 70 Hours for World Cup Screen Viewing

Must read

Neil McKnight, a dedicated fan, is embarking on a 70-hour journey to the United States to catch a World Cup group match – albeit on a television screen. The enthusiastic Scot is flying from London to Miami to witness Brazil go against Scotland from the comfort of a TV. Despite never traveling abroad to support Scotland before, Neil is determined to fulfill a dream he’s had since the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

Following Scotland’s recent victory over Haiti, Neil is hopeful to witness their progression to the knockout stages in the US. Although the trip will set him back over £1000, Neil is convinced it will be a worthwhile experience. Despite not securing a match ticket, Neil, an avid Ayr United supporter, is eager to be part of the Tartan Army’s presence at the World Cup.

Staying in an AirBnB in Little Havana, a suburb of Miami, Neil is opting for a cost-effective return flight to London via Charlotte instead of a direct route. A lifelong football enthusiast, Neil, aged 62, originally from Ayr and now residing in Sawbridgeworth, Herts, reminisces attending his first Ayr United game in 1969 and witnessing Scotland play in 1982, but this will be his first time supporting them overseas.

His decision to travel received mixed reactions from friends like Andy Clayden, a QPR supporter, who humorously remarked on the expenses involved. Scotland’s group in the tournament includes matches against Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil, marking their comeback to the finals since France in 1998. A strong contingent of Tartan Army fans has already made their presence felt in Boston, singing, “No Scotland – no party.”

The tournament commenced with the opening ceremony in Mexico City last Thursday, with the final scheduled to take place in East Rutherford, just outside New York, on July 19th. Readers are encouraged to share their unique travel stories to the States via email.
