Canada’s male and female flag football teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the world championships in Germany. The men’s team secured second place in their group with a 2-1 record after a 37-28 loss to Japan. They were granted a victory over Nigeria, who withdrew due to visa issues. Japan’s quarterback, Take Taniguchi, threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s Michael O’Connor contributed three TD passes. The men’s team is set to face American Samoa in the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, the women’s team finished at the top of their group with a flawless 3-0 record following a 34-20 victory over Japan. They are scheduled to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with a potential semifinal match against the winner of Mexico and Spain. Quarterback Sara Parker led the charge with four touchdown passes against Japan, two of which were caught by Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Additional touchdowns were scored by Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau.
Aside from the quest for the world title, teams at the event are also vying for a chance to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers at the world championships will secure spots in the Olympics, marking the sport’s debut in the program.
