“British Man Jailed for Coaxing US Suicide”

Must read

A man from Britain has been sentenced to prison for coaxing a vulnerable 21-year-old man in the United States to end his own life. Dylan Phelan, a 21-year-old from Churwell in Morley, Leeds, engaged in conversations with Travis Dyer, an American citizen who was facing mental health challenges, over Discord, an online platform.

During a brief video call on October 30, 2024, Phelan, along with two individuals in the US, influenced Travis to commit suicide, with Phelan reportedly laughing in the background after the tragic incident. The trio, part of a private Discord server named ‘Recovery4all,’ discussed mental health topics, although their actions were far from supportive.

Evidence revealed that Travis was coerced by the group into reckless behavior, including spending all his money on substances and carving the men’s initials into his skin. This led to a tragic outcome as Travis eventually took his own life.

Phelan was apprehended following his parents’ disclosure to authorities, who were informed about their son’s involvement in Travis’s death. Subsequent investigations uncovered disturbing content on Phelan’s electronic devices, leading to his conviction for various offenses.

The court sentenced Phelan to six years and four months in prison after he admitted to encouraging suicide, possessing explicit material, and creating indecent images of a child. Additionally, he received a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Detective Inspector Dan Ridgway emphasized the importance of reporting harmful behavior and seeking professional help for mental health struggles.

Travis’s family expressed their grief over the loss of their beloved son and highlighted the positive relationships he had online. They urged others facing mental health challenges to seek professional assistance and remember Travis as a cherished family member.
