Teachers and students at a school are being lauded for their bravery and resilience after a terrifying bear attack in Bella Coola, Canada. The incident occurred while a group was hiking near Highway 20, with emergency services responding to reports of an animal attack around 1:46 pm on November 20.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found numerous individuals injured, some critically. Four people were swiftly transported to hospitals, two in critical condition and two with serious injuries. The group involved in the attack was from the Acwsalcta School, which is operated by the Nuxalk Nation.
In response to the incident, the school announced its closure for the day and commended the teachers and students for their courageous actions. A parent, Veronica Schooner, shared her son’s harrowing experience during the attack, describing how he had to run for safety as the bear approached.
Authorities confirmed that a grizzly bear was involved in the attack, with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police also present at the scene. Residents were advised to avoid the area until further notice due to the lingering presence of the aggressive bear. Efforts were made to halt the attack, with one teacher sustaining severe injuries and requiring evacuation by helicopter.
The Nuxalk Nation warned the public about the roaming bear and urged people to stay indoors for safety. The incident has left the community shaken, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in wildlife-heavy areas.
