“Beware: AI Scammers Targeting Virgin Media O2 Users”

Must read

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning new scam that has been on the rise. The telecommunications company has raised an alert due to a significant increase in individuals falling victim to fraudulent call center numbers generated by artificial intelligence.

Reports indicate that millions may have already been deceived into dialing numbers that connect them to cybercriminals aiming to steal sensitive information, such as financial details.

It is estimated that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered phony customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools.

Virgin Media highlighted that criminals are leveraging AI-powered technology to display fake phone numbers, websites, and search results to consumers seeking to contact reputable brands. This deceptive tactic is used to extract data and perpetrate fraud.

As people increasingly rely on AI-generated search results for information, hackers find it easier to set up their schemes, preying on unsuspecting individuals.

To mitigate the risk, Virgin advises customers to strictly use authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, applications, or billing statements. For direct communication with O2, customers should dial 202 from an O2 device, and for Virgin Media, the contact number is 150 from a landline.

Furthermore, it is crucial to exercise caution when encountering numbers suggested by search engines, social media posts, or AI tools. It is also emphasized not to disclose security codes or personal information to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity.

Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized that scammers exploit the urgency of individuals seeking quick assistance by creating realistic fake numbers through AI tools, putting people at risk of contacting criminals rather than legitimate service providers.

Virgin Media O2 is actively working to protect customers by blocking known scammer numbers within the network and utilizing AI to identify over 1 billion suspicious calls. To combat evolving scam tactics, individuals are encouraged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to facilitate faster scam prevention measures.

By raising awareness and taking collective action against fraudulent activities, customers can contribute to safeguarding themselves and others from falling victim to scams.
