Must read

A wild bear was put down due to posing a threat to public safety after a confrontation with a married couple and their dog in Mammoth Lakes near Yosemite National Park, California. The wife intervened when one of their dogs engaged with the bear, leading to the bear attacking her. Subsequently, the husband came to her rescue, prompting the bear to focus on him. The wife managed to deter the bear using a water bottle before the husband retrieved a small axe and scared the bear away.

Both the couple and their dogs sustained injuries during the incident but are expected to recover fully. Following the altercation, local environmental officers euthanized the bear as it was deemed a public safety risk. Mammoth Lakes Police Chief Dan Casabian emphasized the rarity of such incidents in the area and commended the couple’s recovery and the swift response of the authorities involved.

Authorities confirmed the euthanization of the bear, highlighting that it was done to eliminate any further risk to the public. They also mentioned that the couple sought medical attention independently, with the dogs also expected to fully recover from their injuries. Residents have been reminded to maintain a safe distance from bears and take precautions to prevent bear interactions near residential areas by securing trash and avoiding leaving pet food outside.
