An Irish amateur rider has accused top British jockey Nico de Boinville of directing a racially offensive remark at him during an incident at Cheltenham on Wednesday. Declan Queally and de Boinville, who rides for trainer Nicky Henderson, engaged in a heated altercation at the start of the Turners Novices’ Hurdle, the first race on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival.
Tensions rose as the riders vied for position among the 21-horse field, resulting in two false starts before the race commenced. De Boinville ultimately finished second on Act Of Innocence, with Queally coming in fifth aboard I’ll Sort That.
Following the race, Queally expressed his displeasure to ITV Racing, stating, “The start was chaotic. Being subjected to abuse from English rider Nico de Boinville is unacceptable. I’m an amateur, here with my family. It was awful.” De Boinville responded by suggesting Queally reflect on his behavior.
During a stewards’ inquiry, it was reported that Queally, along with other riders, had contributed to the false starts by not approaching the starting line appropriately. Queally and another rider received suspensions for their conduct.
Queally later alleged that de Boinville had used racially derogatory language towards him, a claim that he reported to the BHA stewards for investigation. De Boinville declined to comment on the matter when contacted.
The stewards have adjourned the inquiry to gather additional evidence after hearing statements from both Queally and de Boinville.
