“Windsor Student Housing Developer Faces Costly Thefts”

Must read

Allen Siyou Wu expressed his surprise at the repeated incidents of vandalism and theft at his student housing construction site in Windsor. Despite the housing shortage in Canada and the government’s push for new housing, Wu was dismayed by the lack of support for builders like himself. He emphasized the need for increased nighttime patrols to deter criminal activities like the theft of copper wiring, which has cost his project thousands of dollars in repairs.

Wu, along with his business partners, is currently developing student residences near the University of Windsor campus. The project involves constructing two three-level homes with eight bedrooms each, amounting to a total investment of approximately $1.6 million. The thefts primarily occur overnight, with thieves cutting and removing sections of electrical cable from the construction site.

Following multiple incidents, Wu reached out to the mayor’s office for assistance, only to receive a suggestion to hire private security services. Frustrated by the challenges they have faced, including high fees and thefts, Wu and his partners feel that the support for housing projects falls short of what is needed.

The issue of copper theft extends beyond Windsor, with federal discussions highlighting the risks posed to essential infrastructure. Recent warnings from Sarnia police and reports of significant repair costs due to copper theft in Windsor underscore the severity of the problem. Municipalities are taking action by implementing stricter regulations for salvage businesses to combat the issue.

Norbert Bolger, chair of the Windsor-Essex Home Builders’ Association, acknowledged the prevalence of such crimes and suggested enhanced security measures as a necessary step. While theft incidents remain a challenge for builders like Wu, Bolger encouraged swift completion of projects and emphasized the importance of learning from such experiences in the construction industry.
