“Syrians Rally for Justice After Custody Death”

Must read

Syrians demonstrated this week demanding justice following the passing of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian individual who died in a hospital after reportedly facing mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred shortly after the new government’s pledge to move away from the widespread arbitrary detentions and abuse that characterized the previous regime.

Ghamira’s family informed the police that the 29-year-old, a father of two, had hemophilia, a genetic condition affecting blood clotting. He was detained for three days, released on August 9, and rushed to the hospital, where he passed away a week later.

The death of Ghamira has become a crucial test for Syria’s new administration to demonstrate accountability post the Assad regime’s long-standing authoritarian rule. His demise prompted peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins, shedding light on reported mistreatment at detention centers under the new government.

Fadel Abdulghany, the Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), highlighted concerns over the lack of a unified, judicially supervised system governing detention practices in the country’s transitional period.

Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was buried in his hometown after being detained on suspicion of theft. His family was barred from contacting him during his custody, despite notifying authorities of his medical condition.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into Ghamira’s death, leading to the detention of seven Interior Ministry personnel for questioning. The inquiry revealed that Ghamira succumbed to complications from a cerebral hemorrhage, with evidence pointing to physical abuse during interrogation.

Rights groups, including Families for Freedom, have called for an independent and transparent investigation into Ghamira’s death, stressing the need for systemic reforms to prevent future abuses in detention facilities. The interim government’s commitment to accountability is under scrutiny as reports indicate ongoing mistreatment despite promises of upholding the rule of law.
