The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL by enduring a 15-game losing streak, the longest in the league’s modern history. The team’s latest defeat came at the hands of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers with a score of 33-21, extending their losing streak from the previous season. Surpassing the Shreveport Pirates’ 14-game losing streak in 1994, the Redblacks now hold the modern-day record, as confirmed by CFL historian Steve Daniel.
Expressing disappointment, Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata, who witnessed the record-setting loss in Winnipeg, emphasized the team’s struggle without pinpointing a specific cause. The tradition of cutting a “wood cookie” for every touchdown at home games has seen a decline due to the team’s recent lack of success, as Fata, a longtime participant in the ritual, noted.
In addition to the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks’ losing streak now ranks as the third-longest in CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss in the upcoming game against the Montreal Alouettes would tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second-longest losing streak. The record for the longest losing streak in CFL history belongs to two Ottawa clubs from the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Analyzing the Redblacks’ current situation, Daniel highlighted the need for a roster rebuild, especially on the defensive side. Following significant changes after the eighth loss, including adjustments to the defensive line, the team has shown some improvement in recent games, signaling a step in the right direction.
Despite the challenges, Daniel emphasized the importance of fan support during tough times. Fata echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the loyalty required from fans during both victories and defeats, likening it to supporting a child through thick and thin. Fata remains optimistic about the team’s future, acknowledging the difficulties of the ongoing losing streak but reaffirming his commitment as a dedicated football fan.
