A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, yet guitarist Paul Langlois admits he still grapples with the experience. Reflecting on the event in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on “The National,” Langlois expressed astonishment at the passage of time since their farewell show.
The night was poignant as lead singer Gord Downie bid farewell to a crowd at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre (now known as Slush Puppi Place) and to viewers nationwide. Tears flowed as Downie delivered emotional renditions of hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time, marking the culmination of The Tragically Hip’s extensive career that began in 1984 and encompassed 13 studio albums.
Following Downie’s diagnosis of terminal brain cancer in December 2015 and his subsequent passing in October 2017 at the age of 53, the band retired after their 2016 tour. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of their final concert, CBC will rebroadcast the show, “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration,” this Saturday.
Guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the enduring impact of the band’s music on fans and their tributes to Downie. While Langlois initially felt unsettled before the last performance, seeing Downie’s enthusiasm during soundcheck uplifted the band’s spirits, setting the tone for a memorable show.
Despite concerns about Downie’s health affecting his performance, the band was moved by his resilience and physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Reflecting on the unexpected magnitude of their final show’s impact, Langlois admitted they underestimated the widespread emotional connection and outreach from fans.
While affirming that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album, “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” showcasing recordings from their farewell tour. Baker emphasized the healing power of music, sharing a personal anecdote about finding solace through music during times of grief.
As the band members cherish the legacy of their final performance, they remain steadfast in their decision not to reunite, focusing instead on honoring their past achievements and continuing to find solace and inspiration through music.
