Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast who goes by her first name only, expressed her delight in engaging in yoga sessions at the Legion. She finds it a place for a good stretch, grounding, and a sense of community.
Legions nationwide, traditionally comprising mostly veterans, are now striving to draw in younger individuals like Hannah through innovative activities, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere. To celebrate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary this year, first-time members are granted free membership countrywide.
Volunteers at the Legion stress that prior military service is not a prerequisite for participation. Hannah, who has family members with military backgrounds, feels a connection to her heritage when she visits the Legion.
Legions have historically served as centers for veteran support, hosting Remembrance Day events, community meals, and commemorative gatherings. Nujma Bond, the national spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, highlighted that while these core functions remain, many branches are evolving to attract new members and ideas.
The Royal Canadian Legion has seen a surge in membership, surpassing 100,000 new members in 2026, bringing the total to over 300,000. Despite this growth, some Legions have faced closure due to financial and operational challenges.
Dennis Mills, the president of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, shared the branch’s past struggles and subsequent evolution. The Legion now offers affordable dining and entertainment, welcoming everyone through its doors.
Looking ahead, the Bala Legion aims to expand its services by offering affordable rental housing units on its premises. Mills stressed the importance of attracting new members to ensure the Legion’s sustainability and vibrancy in serving the community.
