Doctor in Italy dies in horse riding accident; community mourns

A tragic incident unfolded when a doctor lost her life in a horse riding accident in front of her young daughter. Donatella Mecchia, a mother of two, sustained a fatal head injury after being thrown from her horse during a lesson at a local equestrian center. Despite immediate medical attention at Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Italy, where she was taken on the morning of Friday, June 5, the 46-year-old doctor succumbed to her injuries shortly before 10 am.

Following her passing, a farewell ceremony was held at the Meda Funeral Home in Corbetta, near Milan. The heartbreaking event has left her husband, Marco Di Carlo, daughters Aurora and Beatrice, siblings Cristina and Alessandro, and her parents devastated. Loved ones described Donatella as a resilient and caring individual who cherished her family deeply.

Originally from San Vito al Tagliamento but residing in the Milan area, Donatella was a graduate in medicine and surgery, specializing in pathological anatomy at the University of Milan. She held prominent clinical and research positions and was highly respected in the field of aesthetic medicine.

Colleagues fondly remembered her as a dedicated teacher with a warm and infectious personality that left a lasting impact. The Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine paid tribute to her as a distinguished professional. In a final act of kindness, Donatella donated her organs, providing a new lease on life to five individuals.

In a heartfelt tribute, Marco Ballarini, the Mayor of Corbetta, expressed condolences on behalf of the city, acknowledging Donatella’s contributions to the community. Her daughter, Aurora, shared touching words in memory of her mother, highlighting the love and light she brought into the lives of those around her.

This tragic loss has deeply affected many, underscoring the profound impact Donatella had on her family, colleagues, and community.
