Keir Starmer has emphasized that Britain will play a central role in Europe, setting the tone ahead of an upcoming crucial UK-EU summit in Brussels next month. The Prime Minister demonstrated his commitment by announcing July 22 as the date for the summit during discussions with European leaders at the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.
Amidst speculation about his political future, Mr. Starmer faces potential competition from Andy Burnham, who is anticipated to challenge the PM following the Makerfield by-election on Thursday. Downing Street affirmed Mr. Starmer’s dedication to delivering for the British populace when questioned about his continued role leading up to the summit.
In unveiling the UK-EU summit schedule, Mr. Starmer declared, “My Labour Government is fulfilling our pledge to reset our relationship and position Britain at the core of Europe. Together, we will address the cost of living, enhance job opportunities, and create prospects for young individuals.”
One key agenda item at the summit is a youth mobility agreement, permitting individuals under 30 from both the UK and EU member states to work, study, and live in each other’s countries. However, discussions are ongoing regarding tuition fees for EU students in England, UK’s call for a cap on participant numbers, and uncertainty surrounding European countries’ willingness to issue visas for British youths.
Echoes of Brexit-related debates have resurfaced, particularly after leadership contender Wes Streeting hinted at the possibility of rejoining the EU. Andy Burnham previously dismissed calls to reverse Brexit, cautioning against being embroiled in perpetual Brexit discussions. However, he appeared to soften his stance by expressing hopes for the UK to rejoin the EU during Labour’s annual conference in September.
During the G7 summit, Mr. Starmer held separate meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. Mr. Costa emphasized the significance of EU-UK collaboration for shared European security, resilience, and prosperity, underscoring efforts to ensure the success of the upcoming summit in Brussels on July 22.
