WhatsApp is set to address a major concern by introducing a new feature that will allow users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. This change comes after years of users being limited to exchanging phone numbers for messaging on the platform.
The upcoming update will introduce unique usernames, enabling users to share these usernames instead of their phone numbers for communication. WhatsApp stated that sharing phone numbers can sometimes feel intrusive, especially when connecting with new people like classmates, neighbors, or event contacts.
The addition of usernames will not only enhance privacy but also make group conversations more secure. Users joining group chats or social communities can now engage without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers.
Users are encouraged to reserve their preferred usernames in advance as the feature rolls out gradually over the next few months. With billions of users on the platform, securing a desired username early will increase the chances of getting the preferred name before it gets taken.
To reserve a username, users need to update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp will notify users when usernames become available in their region as the feature becomes accessible.
