Once you’ve tasted sourdough bread, you may never go back to any other type. Its unique tangy flavor and chewy texture are unparalleled, making it a must-have in my pantry. Jason’s is a well-known brand for sourdough, and I have been a loyal customer, particularly enjoying their ciabattin variety for its perfect toasting size.
While a loaf of sourdough typically costs between £2.15 and £2.50, I decided to test four supermarket own-brand sourdough loaves to see how they stack up against Jason’s. Visiting Tesco, Aldi, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, I found prices ranging from £1.50 to £2.44, with the most expensive loaf being one of the smallest, piquing my interest.
After trying slices of each bread, including one from Jason’s for comparison, I aimed to find a suitable alternative due to the occasional difficulty in finding the original loaf in supermarkets. I discovered a standout winner, cheaper than Jason’s, that I would gladly purchase again without hesitation.
This particular loaf, which I now grab weekly, offers the classic chewy sourdough texture with added depth of flavor from its unique preparation technique. While the slices are smaller than traditional sourdough loaves, they fit perfectly in the toaster, offering plenty of slices that freeze well. Though not ideal for sandwiches, it excels as a toast option.

Despite being the priciest loaf, it was disappointing to find only eight slices in the pack upon returning home. Asda’s typically dependable ‘exceptional’ range did not meet expectations, with underwhelming taste and dense consistency, though the softness of the slices earned it some points.

Another loaf failed to deliver a true sourdough experience, lacking chewiness and moisture with a less crispy crust. While considering trying the rye variety, the white loaf left me unimpressed, unlikely to be a repeat purchase.

Sainsbury’s surprisingly offered good value with a superb tasting loaf that was tangy, soft, and toasted well. Despite thin slices with noticeable holes, it became my runner-up choice that I would purchase again.

The ultimate winner for me was a loaf with a perfect crust, rich flavor, and ideal saltiness that enhanced its taste when toasted. While the bread had some holes, unlike Jason’s, its overall flavor stood out. Look for the Tesco Finest variety, currently priced at £1.50 with a Clubcard or £2 without, for a delightful sourdough experience.
