Octopus Energy is introducing 300 homes dubbed “zero bills” residences, where occupants are promised free gas and electricity for a minimum of ten years. The energy provider has teamed up with Prosperity Group to construct this new development in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, with an anticipated completion date in 2028.
These homes, equipped with heat pumps, batteries, and solar panels, are yet to have their pricing revealed. The initiative arrives amid an impending increase in the energy price cap due to elevated oil costs resulting from the Iran conflict, currently standing at £1,641 annually for the average household.
Octopus Energy has already authorized over 6,000 “zero bills” homes in collaboration with prominent developers, offering a range of housing options such as private rentals, private ownership, and shared ownership. The company’s objective is to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, extending the program to countries like Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK.
Data from Octopus indicates a surge in sales of heat pumps by 103%, solar panels by 78%, and electric vehicle charger inquiries by 42% as Britons strive for energy self-sufficiency. Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, emphasized the importance of protecting households from fluctuating energy prices through the Zero Bills tariff, which is now a tangible reality.
Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, highlighted their commitment to innovative and high-quality developments, leveraging Octopus Energy’s advanced technology to enhance living experiences and ensure long-term investment performance. With growing emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability, they aim to future-proof assets while meeting evolving regulatory standards.
