“Pack Smart: Essential Tips for Safely Bringing Electronics on Flights”

Must read

Britons traveling internationally need to be cautious about the everyday items they bring on flights. Packing carry-on luggage has specific restrictions, leading to confusion about what is allowed. One common misunderstanding is regarding electronics. Passengers are actually advised to bring essential devices in their cabin bags rather than checking them in.

The Foreign Office website clarifies that most electrical items are permitted in cabin luggage, including mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and MP3 players. Surprisingly, passengers can also bring hair straighteners and hairdryers on most airlines. Additionally, travel irons and electric shavers are typically allowed on flights, along with e-cigarettes in hand luggage.

However, a crucial rule that many travelers overlook is that electronic devices must be fully charged before boarding. If a device fails to power on when requested, it will not be permitted on the aircraft. This requirement emphasizes the importance of ensuring all electronic devices in your carry-on are operational.

Failure to prove that a device can be switched on could result in being denied boarding or having to part ways with the device. Airlines often mandate that certain electronic items, like loose lithium power banks, external batteries, spare batteries, and e-cigarettes, must be carried in hand luggage due to safety concerns.

Ryanair, for instance, specifies that passengers can carry up to 15 personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, and headphones. Guidelines also restrict spare batteries to a maximum of 20, provided they do not exceed 100Wh each. Most airlines adhere to similar regulations concerning electronic devices.

For those unsure about what to include in their carry-on, it is advisable to review the rules and regulations of the chosen airline beforehand. Conducting research ahead of time can prevent issues at the airport and ensure a smooth travel experience.
