Two prominent American commentators known for their outspoken anti-Israel sentiments have been barred from entering the United Kingdom. Cenk Uygur, host of the online talk show “The Young Turks,” and his nephew Hasan Piker were both denied entry to the country for the SXSW London event. Uygur also reported being prohibited from speaking at an event at Oxford University.
Piker previously caused controversy by stating that America “deserved 9/11” in a comment from 2019, which he later apologized for. He has expressed views favoring Hamas over Israel, leading to accusations of promoting anti-Semitic rhetoric. The decision to cancel their electronic travel authorization (ETA) was made by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, citing concerns that their presence could fuel anti-Semitism.
Both Uygur and Piker criticized the UK’s decision, with Uygur questioning the restriction as an infringement on freedom, and Piker accusing Israel of influencing the ban. Jewish organization the Community Security Trust urged event organizers to act responsibly and not provide a platform for Piker, citing his history of promoting anti-Semitic themes and extremist views.
Labour MP David Taylor supported the visa revocation, emphasizing the importance of not allowing hate speech and divisive ideologies to spread. Arwa Elrayess, president of the Oxford Union, expressed disappointment in the decision to bar Uygur, advocating for open debate and free expression of ideas.
The Home Office defended the cancellation of the commentators’ travel authorization, stating that the decision was based on assessing potential risks to UK society. In a separate incident, the government also prevented 11 foreign nationals described as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK for a rally led by Tommy Robinson in London.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized the decision, suggesting it reflects a concerning trend of stifling criticism of the Israeli government. SXSW London acknowledged the travel restrictions imposed by the Home Office, reiterating their commitment to hosting diverse voices and promoting open dialogue during the event.
