“London Falls Short: Revealing UK’s Priciest Weekend Break Destination”

Must read

The latest findings have revealed that the costliest weekend break destination in the UK might not be where most people expect. London, known for its high prices across various aspects such as accommodation, entertainment, dining, and beverages, can quickly accumulate expenses. On average, a weekend getaway in the capital can cost a couple around £527.50 for a two-night stay.

To assist travelers in maximizing their budget, the Post Office has unveiled the 50 most budget-friendly cities in Europe in their ‘City Costs Barometer 2026’. Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina emerged as the most economical city for a two-night stay for two, followed by Bucharest in Romania and Tirana in Albania.

Interestingly, UK cities did not make it to the top 20, with Cardiff in Wales ranking 21st with a total cost of £377.64, and London placed at 34th. However, the study also highlighted the UK’s priciest city for a weekend trip, with costs nearly double that of Cardiff and around £150 more expensive than London.

Edinburgh in Scotland, with its striking castle, volcanic landscapes, historic sites, and charming streets, is a popular destination. Despite its appeal, it was identified as the most costly UK city for a two-night escape, ranking 48th on the list with an average expenditure of £668.10 for two people. Accommodation played a significant role in driving up prices, with an average cost of £462 for a two-night stay for two at a three-star hotel.

For those seeking to save money while enjoying a staycation, Cardiff emerges as the most affordable UK city for a weekend break. Laura Plunkett, head of Travel Money at Post Office, advised travelers to carefully research destinations to make the most of their money, especially in times of economic challenges.
