Thomas Hand never imagined he would witness his daughter’s 11th birthday after she was held captive by Hamas in Gaza for 49 days. Two years ago, Emily Hand was finally released on October 7th, marking the end of her harrowing ordeal. Celebrating her birthday recently, Thomas shared a heartwarming photo of Emily surrounded by gifts, including one from a fellow hostage who supported her during her captivity. Additionally, Emily returned from a therapeutic trip to Disney in Florida to aid her recovery, as revealed by Thomas in an emotional interview with the Mirror.
Reflecting on the past two years, Thomas expressed his disbelief at Emily’s survival, admitting he had feared the worst when she was taken by Hamas. Grateful for her safe return, Thomas mentioned how Emily has slowly been recovering from the traumatic experience. Originally from Dublin, Thomas now resides in Israel, where he works at a printing shop at Be’eri kibbutz.
Thomas shared that Emily has formed a strong bond with Noa Argamani, who acted as a supportive figure during Emily’s captivity. Noa, who was held captive alongside Emily, continues to be a source of comfort for Emily and even sent her a thoughtful gift for her birthday. Thomas mentioned that both Emily and Noa aspire to return to their former kibbutz near the Gaza border.
Expressing their desire to return to the kibbutz, Thomas acknowledged the emotional challenges associated with revisiting the place where Emily was kidnapped. Although their house remains untouched, Thomas highlighted the painful memories and losses that Emily may confront upon returning.
During the traumatic incident, Emily, a friend, and the friend’s mother were taken captive, leading to the tragic death of Emily’s stepmother, Narkiss. Thomas described Emily’s progress since her release, noting her initial fear and subsequent gradual recovery process, including reconnecting with friends and engaging in therapeutic activities like horseback riding and surfing.
Despite the challenges Emily has faced, Thomas expressed gratitude for her resilience and emphasized the importance of continued support for former hostages like Emily and Noa. He remains appreciative of Emily’s journey and the progress she has made in overcoming her traumatic experience.
