Eleven individuals have been apprehended following the tragic demise of an entire family during their vacation in Turkey. The family, consisting of a mother, father, and their two young children, fell critically ill and passed away in their hotel room in Istanbul, initially suspected to be due to food poisoning.
The family had been exploring local street food establishments in the city before falling ill. Police are now probing the use of a pesticide in the hotel to eradicate bedbugs as a potential cause of their deaths.
Several arrests have been made, including hotel staff, as authorities suspect that aluminum phosphide, a pesticide used in a ground floor room for bedbug treatment, may have inadvertently reached the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation system, leading to their poisoning.
Aluminum phosphide is a potent toxic substance commonly used in agriculture and households as a pesticide, capable of causing fatalities when inhaled in significant amounts. Investigators also discovered that one employee of the pest control company lacked the necessary certification for handling such chemicals.
The hotel has been evacuated and sealed off for further investigation, with law enforcement gathering samples from various areas within the building. Additionally, belongings of two other guests from Italy and Morocco, who also fell ill with suspected poisoning, were removed from their rooms for examination.
Video footage captured the family’s arrival at the hotel in Istanbul on November 9, with their subsequent hospitalization due to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Tragically, the mother and children passed away shortly thereafter, while the father succumbed to the illness after a week in intensive care.
The investigation is ongoing with toxicology tests being conducted on samples from the victims and the hotel premises. Family members seek justice, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assuring a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy.
