A popular Brazilian social media personality met a tragic end this week following a fatal incident at her 26th birthday celebration where she and her guests consumed homemade whiskey allegedly contaminated with methanol.
Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza, known for her Instagram comedy content and a following of 23,000, celebrated her birthday in Petrolina, Brazil. She and her boyfriend purchased the tainted whiskey from a rural village near São Bento do Una city and shared it with a friend during the festivity on Monday night.
They consumed approximately one and a half liters of the liquor, as disclosed by de Souza’s mother to local news outlet g1. While her boyfriend felt unwell the next day, de Souza appeared lively and cheerful.
However, she fell ill later that night and succumbed to the suspected poisoning. De Souza’s boyfriend and the friend who also ingested the whiskey were hospitalized with methanol poisoning. Their current conditions are unknown as of Thursday, according to reports.
De Souza’s mother, Ozenilda Feitosa, recounted the events, stating that her daughter’s boyfriend felt sick the morning after the celebration, while de Souza seemed fine until later that evening when her health rapidly deteriorated.
An investigation into the untimely demise of de Souza is underway. Methanol, a clear liquid commonly used in various industrial applications, is known to cause severe health issues when consumed by humans, often through contaminated beverages.
The symptoms of methanol poisoning include nausea, abdominal pain, visual impairment, dizziness, weakness, and potential loss of consciousness. In severe cases, it can lead to death.
Authorities have seized the remaining whiskey for analysis, and the influencer’s funeral was held at the Campo da Esperança Cemetery in Petrolina.
