A massive huntsman spider was recently uncovered in a shipment of bananas at a local school in Ramsey, near Huntingdon, Cambs. The bananas had traveled approximately 3,200 miles from the Ivory Coast. Experts identified the spider as a Barylestis spp, known for their speed and aggressive nature when hunting prey.
Despite their intimidating appearance, Huntsman spiders pose no serious threat to humans due to their mild venom. Chris Newman, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, confirmed the spider’s likely species origin from the Ivory Coast.
Local residents expressed shock and fear upon hearing about the spider incident. Some vowed to be more cautious when handling fruits, with one person jokingly mentioning that her husband pretends not to know her when she meticulously inspects produce at the store.
While some individuals reacted with alarm, others made light-hearted comments about avoiding bananas altogether. The discovery of the huntsman spider has prompted a mix of reactions from the community.
